Castle Rock Trail

Big Bear is that we like to be outside. The rugged scenery, the clean air, and the sheer beauty of our home town is meant to be enjoyed—and not just from behind the window of your Big Bear cabin. Get out there and feel the breeze on your face as you hike along the many trails that can be found in the area. The Castle Rock Trail is a popular one, best explored in summer, as the trail is steep, and snow and ice in the winter can make it tricky to navigate.

How to Get to the Castle Rock Trail Big Bear

Although the sign marking the Castle Rock hiking trail head is rather small, it is still relatively easy to get there. Castle Rock Trail is about 1.1 miles east of Big Bear Dam on State Highway 18. Maps of this trail—and all others in the region—can be found at the Big Bear Discovery Center. There is parking nearby (visible on your map) and an adventure pass is not needed. However, you might want one anyway to take part in other activities in the area. Adventure passes cost just $5/day, or $30/year, and the proceeds all go towards conservation, preservation, and protection of the natural landscape of southern California.

Castle Rock Trail Big Bear Details

Castle Rock Trail Big Bear isn’t long, but it is steep. The elevation increases over 500 feet, meaning if you’re not in tip top shape, you may want to discover an easier trail that’s more your speed. Not recommended for young children (unless you’re willing to carry your angels on your back), the nearly two and a half miles of this scenic pathway can be difficult even for experienced hikers; make sure you are realistic and know your limitations.

Castle Rock Trail gets its name from a nearby rock formation that is shaped like a castle. The payoff for the extra exertion required to complete this hike quickly becomes apparent as you reach the clearing; the views of the lake and the trees that surround this heavenly spot will take your breath away and remain in your heart long after you have returned to your job and real life at home. Don’t forget your camera: You’re going to want to upload this scene to your computer to be used as a screensaver—it’s that perfect!
