Stanfield Marsh Wildlife and Waterfowl Preserve

Welcome to the Best Big Bear CabinsArea GuideBig Bear AttractionsStanfield Marsh Wildlife and Waterfowl Preserve

As our world grows older, the problems Mother Earth face could be considered just a natural part of aging, but we think it’s important that earth’s inhabitants do their part in keeping the world young and vibrant—especially when it comes to our wildlife and waterfowls. Pollution, de-forestation, and hunting for sport all contribute to an environment that is hostile and unforgiving to the innocent creatures who make their homes here.

The Stanfield Marsh Wildlife and Waterfowl Preserve, however, offers a safe haven for weak, injured and sickly creatures who just may not have survived on their own in the wild. It is one of our favorite places to visit in our off time; why don’t you check it out and see if you agree?

A Peaceful Sanctuary

Located on the corner of the Stanfield Cutoff and Big Bear Boulevard, this 145-acre marsh is a haven for Big Bear wildlife and waterfowl that, until 1982, had no safe place to roost. It offers the opportunity for a quiet stroll along its wooden boardwalk, where osprey, bald eagles, and even nesting pelicans are some of the waterfowl you can expect to see while on your stroll. The variety is ever changing, along with the seasons.

Renovations to this haven have included the construction of an island that is free of predators to the Big Bear animals that make their home here and the addition of over 40,000 plants indigenous to the region that were planted by local schoolchildren who volunteered for the privilege. Our delicate ecosystem received a reprieve as the Big Bear Municipal Water District pledged to continue with their mission of educating and protecting the Big Bear wildlifeand waterfowl that otherwise could soon become endangered.

The Best Time to View the Animals

As much of the Big Bear wildlifeis nocturnal, there are times you won’t be able to see much of the animals, but it is still a very nice hike. We can understand that you are probably most interested in seeing the Big Bear animals and waterfowl at their most active. If so, your best times to visit are early in the morning or late in the afternoon; this is when the hungry creatures are alert and seeking food, and the “show” can be extremely entertaining!
