About Bear Mountain California
Originally called Goldmine Mountain, the owners of neighboring mountain, Snow Summit, bought Goldmine in 2002 and changed its name to Big Bear Mountain. Today, only one pass is needed for both resorts, doubling your fun for half the price! And even better, there’s a free shuttle running between the two mountains (which are only a few miles apart), so you can easily take advantage of both mountains’ specialties. Bear Mountain is a snowboarder’s paradise, and the crowd tends to be younger, whereas Snow Summit is a more traditional ski resort and is more family-oriented.
Known for having the top slopes for both skiing and snowboarding, but also famous for having the largest learning area in southern California, Bear Mountain, located in the San Bernardino Mountains at 880 Summit Boulevard, challenges the best skiers and snowboarders without being too intimidating to the novice sportsmen and women. Their state of the art snow machines mean every day is a good snow day on the mountain. Opening day is scheduled for November 18th. Where are you planning to be on that date?
Bear Mountain has been operating since 1969 and opened the first freestyle park in the 1990s. It also has one of the few Superpipes in Southern California, and its 748 acres of skiable area is perfect for freestyle ski and snowboarding. Locally, Bear Mountain is known as “The Park” since its terrain is so irregular and much favored by snowboarders. With a variety of trails on the mountain, snowboarders of all skill levels can be accommodated.
And there are plenty of things to do during the summer months too. Hike or bike the numerous trails or hit a few golf balls around. Bear Mountain’s 9-hole golf course wraps around the base of the mountain and has a driving range, Pro Shop, Clubhouse, and of course spectacular views of the surrounding San Bernardino Mountains. If you’re tired of golf and snowboarding, take the short shuttle ride over to Snow Summit where you can get in on the mountain bike craze and take lessons, or just start biking on their gravity-fed downhill trails, or head out on over 60 miles of cross-country trails cutting through the forested mountain. Or try your skill on the 30-foot climbing wall, tube park, trampoline, bungee jump, and zip lines. And no trip to Bear Mountain or Snow Summit is complete without a ride on the Scenic Sky Chair for spectacular panoramic views of the area and surrounding mountains.
At the end of a long day of hitting the moguls and the Superpipe, make your way to Laybacks, Bear Mountain’s outdoor bar, (located just outside the Main Lodge), to relax with a well-deserved adult beverage (or two) and to do some serious people-watching or just enjoy the lovely San Bernardino Mountains.
Lessons
You may start the season a novice, but by vacation’s end, you will be experienced and competent, especially when you take advantage of the lessons packages offered by the resort for skiers of all age and ski levels. They divide the classes into age groups, so while you may have teenagers in your beginning adult class (13+), you’re not going to have to suffer the indignity of a 3 or 4-year-old showing you up! Big Bear Mountain California also offers refresher courses for those of you who once skied frequently, but haven’t been out on a run lately!

Exploring Big Bear
And because man can’t live on skiing alone—no matter how much you may want to—there’s always fun and wonderful things to do in Big Bear during your stay! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so start your day out right with a home-cooked meal from Mountain Munchies. A favorite of the locals, this diner serves sweet treats like blueberry waffles for breakfast; they’re famous for their burgers, if you’re interested in a midday break here as well!
After your hunger has been sated, you can spend a quiet day exploring the Big Bear Alpine Zoo and get an up close and personal glimpse of the giant animals that gave this place its name. Bears aren’t the only inhabitants of this zoo that has been open since 1959; over 85 different species of birds and animals make the Big Bear Alpine Zoo their home.
For those who are celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary and are looking for an upscale restaurant to dine in, The Pines Lakefront offers just the thing. This romantic spot serves steak, seafood, and fine Italian dishes with views of the lake that will make the guest of honor really see how special they are to you!
When it’s time to let your hair down at the end of the day, but you aren’t in the mood for fancy or pretentious, a visit to Whiskey Dave’s will be exactly what you are looking for. Live music, pool tables, and a casual laid-back style that makes you feel like you belong; reputed to be haunted, it’s probably a good thing you can’t stay after closing! Closing time, however, isn’t a sad time because you get to head back to the comfort of your Big Bear Vacations cozy cabin and spend yet another night in a warm and comfortable bed.
