If you have not spent an autumn weekend in Big Bear, you really are missing out on beautiful weather that is perfect for most outdoor activities. The fall season brings down the temperatures quite a bit, allowing you to enjoy all the hiking trails with a light jacket or less. Here is a list of our favorite Big Bear hiking trails that are best accessed during the fall season:
Castle Rock Trail
If we had to pick one trail that is more popular than all the others in Big Bear, we would easily choose Castle Rock Trail. This local trail is extremely popular due to its gorgeous scenery including a seasonal waterfall that is a joy to look at. We find Caste Rock Trail to be one of our favorite fall trails due to the abundance of gold, red, and orange leaves that take control of the surrounding trees. The quieter fall season also sees the larger crowds of summer cleared out so you can enjoy the trail in peace. Castle Rock Trail is rated an intermediate/difficult trail with its steep climb for approximately half a mile at the start of the trial. Castle Rock Trail can be found just east of Big Bear Dam located on Highway 18.
Woodland Interpretive Trail
Learn more about the incredible botany and geology in the area with a relaxed hike around the Woodland Interpretive Trail. While Castle Rock Trail is known for its rigorous hike, the Woodland Interpretive Trail is known for a more relaxed venture in the woods. The 1.5-mile loop takes you across 16 stops that are marked in a brochure available at the trailhead. Each stop will give you insider knowledge to the area while seeing the beauty of Big Bear up close. Some enjoyable views of the lake can be seen straight from the trail. Even bring your canine companion as leashed dogs are allowed on the trail. Keep in mind the Woodland Interpretive Trail requires an Adventure Pass to access it.
