To get to Cougar Crest Trail, you’ll need to begin a little over half of a mile west of the Big Bear Discovery Center on Highway 38. The trail spans a total of about five miles, and is best suited for those with intermediate hiking abilities. Being a popular local trail, the Cougar Crest Trail in Big Bear, CA can sometimes get a little crowded, during which times it is not recommended for biking.
The single track trail takes you through immense ponderosa pines and juniper trees and a gentle uphill climb at the beginning, culminating in an intense altitude gain that peaks at the crossroads of Cougar Crest Trail and the renowned Pacific Crest Trail, where you can see Mexico or Canada from either direction. On your way to the top, the trail opens up to impressive views of Big Bear Lake that stretch as far as the eye can see.
Once you reach the top, you have the option of continuing on to the Pacific Crest Trail (though no biking is allowed on this trail), heading to the top of Bertha Peak, or heading back down the way you came to relive the experience again and soak up the exquisite and diverse natural environment that can be observed on this trail.
