The Best Big Bear Hiking Trails

For visitors who want an easy, pleasant hike, the Alpine Pedal Path, Woodland Trail, and Champion Lodgepole Pine Trail offer gentle trails, self-guided tours of the local botany and wildlife by pamphlet, and spectacular views. Of these three trails, Alpine Pedal Path is the longest at two and a half miles, while Champion Lodgepole Pine Trail is the shortest at just over one half of a mile.

Hikers that are seeking a moderate climb will want to explore Castle Rock Trail, which is two and a half miles round-trip, or Pine Knot Trail, which consists of six miles round-trip. Castle Rock is one of the most popular trails in Big Bear because of its stunning, 360- degree views. Pine Knot Trail begins in the Aspen Glen Picnic Area and winds through swathes of Jeffrey Pine and White Fir trees up to Grand View Point.

Finally, if you’re an experienced hiker who is looking for a challenge, Cougar Crest Trail might be the one for you. Spanning four to five and a half miles, the trail begins half of a mile past the Discovery Center and takes hikers through a diverse range of environments, from a gentle up-hill climb to the world-famous Pacific Crest Trail.
