What You’ll Find on Pine Knot Trail

To find Pine Knot Trail, you’ll first need to take Highway 18 along the west side of Big Bear Lake to Big Bear Lake Dam, continuing along the highway until you’ve reached Mill Creek Road. Just south of Mill Creek Road is parking for the trail, located at Aspen Glen Picnic Area.

From March until November, Pine Knot Trail is open and hikers can observe gorgeous proliferations of wildflowers during the warmer months and dynamic autumnal leaf changes during the cooler months. The trailhead begins at Aspen Glen Picnic Area and heads south, punctuated by wildflowers, pine trees, and oak trees. Switchbacks take hikers through dense forests and wide open meadows to scenic overlooks of Big Bear Lake, Catalina Island, and San Gorgonio. Grand View Point, situated at an elevation of 7,784 feet just one quarter of a mile beyond where Pine Knot Trail and FS Road 2N10 intersect, provides a spectacular and picturesque view of Big Bear Lake.

Pine Knot Trail spans over the course of over six miles, with a moderate trail rating. However, even with only a moderate difficulty, hikers will want to ensure that they have the stamina to hike in and out of the trail should they decide to pay it a visit. Pine Knot Trail is also dog-friendly, though dogs are required to be kept on a leash, especially since the trail is also frequented by bike riders and horseback riders, though it is not as crowded of a trail in comparison to other popular local trails.
