Winding its way through the majestic San Bernardino Mountains, the Rim of the World Scenic Byway encompasses some of the most gorgeous territory in all of Southern California, allowing you to immerse yourself in the spectacular natural scenery of the regions around Big Bear from the comfort and speed of your own car. Continue on below to find out additional information about this incredible, must-see scenic destination.
What You’ll Encounter on the Rim of the World Scenic Byway
Traversing over the course of one hundred and ten miles, the Rim of the World Scenic Byway takes travelers along the rim of the San Bernardino Mountains, from Cajon Pass to San Gorgonio Pass. Along the way, there are numerous vistas and breathtaking panoramic views to be seen.
To find the scenic byway, you’ll need to pass Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake as you head from Phelan to Mentone, reaching Phelan from the I-15 or the exit for CA-138 if you are coming from the south. Before your drive truly begins, you’ll want to take a short detour that ends in a magnificent view. To find the world-famous photography spot of Cajon Pass Overlook, head west on the CA-138 until you reach Mormon Rocks. Behind the fire station here is a half-mile desert trail that leads to a raised sandstone bed. Head east on the CA-138 from here and you will find Cajon Pass Overlook, which looks out over a pass created by the San Andreas Fault.
As you continue on the Rim of the World Scenic Byway (which takes a total of two and a quarter hours to drive in its entirety), you’ll see the Silverwood Lake Overlook, Crestline, Baylis Park Picnic Area, Arrowhead Lake, Heaps Peak Arboretum, Running Springs, Keller Peak Road, Lake View Point, Big Bear Lake, Big Bear Dam, and a bevy of local Big Bear sights.
The Rim of the World Scenic Byway is open all year long, though you’ll need snow chains (possibly new ones) to drive through it during the winter, as the area receives snow.
