Winter Journey to Big Bear

Big Bear is undoubtedly a beautiful year-round destination to enjoy for those looking to get out of the hustle of city living and immerse themselves in a space dedicated to natural beauty and outdoor adventure. While the summer brings options for getting out on the water and making the most of the hiking trails, those that journey this way in the winter will enjoy plenty of options for fun as well! Make the most of every moment of your trip to Big Bear in winter by adding these stops to your must-try list while you’re in town!

Hit the Slopes

A trip to Big Bear in the winter wouldn’t be complete without time spent enjoying the slopes of Big Bear Mountain Resort. In fact, hitting the slopes at Big Bear Resort is the reason most people visit. This popular destination is a great place to ski, snowboard, and even tube your way to fun. A collection of lifts makes it easy to reach the summits you crave and the runs available cater to skill levels of all degrees. Enjoy lessons here if you’re new to skiing or take on the challenging slopes if you’re a more advanced skier. No matter how you spend your time, a trip to Big Bear Mountain Resort in combination with our Big Bear ski cabins always comes with a side of incredible views.

Snow Summit, part of the Big Bear Mountain Resort, also offers plenty of snowy fun. With over 240 acres, and runs and trails for skiers, snowboarders, and tubers of all experience levels, you’ll be able to spend all day (and night) here playing in the snow.

Tubing Fun and More

Remember when you were a kid and you’d throw yourself down any slope you could find, using whatever you could find – cardboard, a tarp, or your trusty red sled? Well, relive your childhood and go tubing while you’re here at Big Bear. Maybe you can teach your kids a thing or two! Tubing in warmer months is usually means a slow, lazy drift down the river, but in winter months, tubing means more fun as you zip down the mountain on your soft, rubber tube. There are several spots at Big Bear Mountain Resort to go tubing. Be sure to give Big Bear’s Snow Play or a try. With long runs and glow tubing on Friday, Saturday and holiday nights, this tubing hill is tons of fun. And if you love snow tubing, you need to stay until after dark when the folks at Magic Mountain light up the hill for night tubing.
Magic Mountain’s Alpine Slide offers the state’s only authentic bobsled experience. It’s open year-round. Start things out with a ride up the mountain on the scenic chairlift, enjoying the panoramic view of Bear Lake. You’ll control your own sled as you barrel down one of the tracks along straight-aways and high-banked curvy turns.

Try Snowshoeing

When the fresh powder falls in Big Bear, it’s often more than traditional hiking boots can handle, but that doesn’t mean the trails are closed to you during a stay. Instead, try strapping on a pair of snowshoes and making the most of trekking your way through an incredible Big Bear journey! The trails are well-maintained throughout the year, so with the proper snowshoeing gear, you’re free to go and explore. Bring your binoculars and keep your eyes open for winter birds that hang around or simply enjoy the scenery in Big Bear style.
Rent some shoes and head out on your own, through the snowy, quiet of the National Forest, or take a guided tour. You can book a Snowshoeing Tour at Action Zipline & Segway Tours at Big Bear Lake and make your way through the whispery ponderosas and Big Bear backcountry. You can also take their Segway tour around Big Bear – snow or no snow. Either way, it’s a fun way to get out in the snow, learn a little history of Big Bear Valley while exploring the area’s forests.

Take to the Skies

Big Bear welcomes visitors year-round, and in the winter, many guests are surprised at just how many unique tours are still available to be enjoyed! Among them is the option to book a helicopter tour with the team at Helicopter Big Bear. Enjoy the view from above as you’re guided through the sky by an experienced and knowledgeable pilot. You’ll want to be sure to have your camera on hand for this one-of-a-kind journey.
Looking for another adrenaline-pumping, high-altitude activity? Book a zipline tour with Action Zipline & Segway Tours at Big Bear Lake. Zip over the tree tops on one of nine runs, admiring views of Johnson Valley and Mt. San Gorgonio (the biggest peak around these parts) as you fly through the air.
