Big Bear is the best spot to enjoy your Memorial Day holiday as the area offers exciting summer activities and some incredible Memorial Day events. Take a look at how you can spend your Memorial Day in Big Bear this year.
Grill and Chill, May 27th and May 28th
People all over the nation will be celebrating this long weekend with barbecues in their backyards and just because you aren’t in your own home this year it doesn’t mean you have to skip the traditional charring of the meat! The Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) State Championship and People’s Choice Award takes place this lovely weekend in Big Bear and you get to sample the best of the best during your visit! Taking place at the Village of Big Bear Lake from 10 AM until 5 PM on both days, there will be live music, shopping opportunities, kids’ activities, and, of course, barbecue and beer! Raise a toast to your personal American hero and relax under sunny skies as your kiddos enjoy Bounce Houses, Balloon Animals, a Climbing Wall, and Face Painting!
Memorial Day Fireworks 2023
Bring in your Memorial Day weekend in style with the annual Memorial Day Fireworks celebration. You can ring in the summer season with this exciting event that will take place on Sunday, May 28th. The fireworks are launched from Big Bear Lake ensuring they are visible all throughout the valley. The fireworks display starts at approximately 9:00 PM to ensure it is completely dark. The way the fireworks light up over the lake makes it a memorable event like no other. You can get the best views of the fireworks from any spot right on the lake shore.
Big Bear Lake Maifest, May 20th, 27th, & 28th
Oktoberfest is always a fun time, but we in Big Bear Lake believe that fall shouldn’t have all the fun, and as such, our Big Bear Lake Maifest is a big hit every year! Known as Oktoberfest’s little sister, participants can dance around the Maypole, drink beer, listen to live music and participate in a host of May activities. Held at the Big Bear Lake Convention Center at 42900 Big Bear Boulevard, one of our favorite traditional Maifest activities includes the log-sawing contests and the Stein Holding Competitions, even though we limit our own Stein holding to one at a time, we can surely appreciate the strength and talents of the competitors who put us to shame!
Memorial Day Ceremony, May 29th
Underneath the frivolity and fun, there is a very sobering reason for celebrating Memorial Day, one that involves paying homage to those brave men and women who sacrificed everything for the freedoms we enjoy today. Our Big Bear Lake Memorial Day Ceremony, held at Veterans Park (40870 Big Bear Boulevard) from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM honors those fallen heroes with a moving presentation that doesn’t leave a dry eye in the house! Pay your respects to your own personal heroes at this wonderful event sponsored by the City of Big Bear Lake and The American Legion of Big Bear Lake and afterward? Stick around for the all-American meal provided at no cost to you! Including hamburgers, hot dogs, brat, and fries, there will also be a raffle after; tickets cost $10 and the giveaway promises to be something exciting and fun!
